Shop Laborer / Shop Assistant

Position Summary

The Shop Laborer / Shop Assistant is responsible for performing light maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on cars, trucks, and off-road/agronomy equipment. This position supports daily operations by ensuring vehicles and equipment are maintained safely and efficiently in accordance with manufacturer guidelines. The role requires a strong focus on safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork while promoting a positive image of the cooperative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair work on vehicles and equipment, including breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside repairs, in a safe, efficient, and quality-focused manner

  • Provide support to mechanics and shop personnel as needed

  • Assist in minimizing vehicle and equipment downtime through timely maintenance and repairs

  • Maintain a positive attitude that promotes teamwork, productivity, and cooperation

  • Uphold all cooperative policies and ensure compliance with federal, state, DOT, and OSHA regulations

  • Work closely with Human Resources to maintain accurate truck licenses, insurance cards, and vehicle registrations

  • Supervise and assist with road tests for new employees, as assigned

  • Be available to work extended hours when business needs require

  • Communicate professionally with employees and leadership to foster positive morale and teamwork

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Current, valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

  • CDL preferred but not required (training available)

  • DOT certification (or ability to obtain)

  • Subject to pre-employment drug testing

  • Drug-free workplace

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of engines, controls, and mechanical systems

  • Familiarity with agricultural vehicles and equipment

  • Welding and cutting skills preferred

  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment

  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and detail

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions

  • Ability to push and pull equipment

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs

  • Ability to grasp and use hand and power tools (e.g., wrenches)

Working Conditions

  • Frequently works outdoors

  • Exposure to noise, weather conditions, and heights
